Santiniketan finds a place on UNESCO's World Heritage List

Santiniketan, a town established by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, made it to the UNESCO's World Heritage List.
• Located in West Bengal's Birbhum district, Santiniketan means "abode of peace".
• It was initially an ashram founded by Debendranath Tagore, but eventually developed into a center of art, culture and learning.
• It started taking shape in 1901 and is where Tagore laid the foundations of Visva-Bharati University.

• The 1972 World Heritage Convention defines the kind of natural or cultural sites which can be considered for inscription on the World Heritage List.
• The World Heritage Committee selects and monitors World Heritage Sites and manages the World Heritage Fund.
• India is a member of the Committee (2021-2025).
