After 2018 and 2021, Kerala has again reported deaths from the Nipah virus in the Kozhikode district.
• It is a zoonotic virus, which means it is transmitted from animals to humans
• Fruit bats are considered to be a natural reservoir of the virus.
• The organism which causes Nipah Virus encephalitis is an RNA or Ribonucleic acid virus of the family Paramyxoviridae.
• It first broke out in Malaysia and Singapore in 1998 and 1999.
• Symptoms include acute encephalitis and respiratory illnesses.
• Currently, there are no vaccines for the virus.
