Engagement with ASEAN an important pillar of India's 'Act East policy'
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations is a regional organization which was established to promote political and social stability amid rising tensions among the Asia-Pacific’s post-colonial states. ASEAN was established with the signing of the ASEAN Declaration (Bangkok Declaration) by its founding fathers in 1967. The motto of ASEAN is “One Vision, One Identity, One Community”.
The Secretariat of ASEAN is in Jakarta, Indonesia.
India-ASEAN relations can be traced to historical and cultural relations.
The ‘Act East Policy’ announced in November, 2014 is the upgrade of the “Look East Policy”.
The Objective of ‘Act East Policy’ is to promote economic cooperation, cultural ties and develop a strategic relationship with countries in the Asia-Pacific region.
