RAJYA SABHA PASSES BIODIVERSITY BILL
The Rajya Sabha passed the Biodiversity (Amendment) Bill, 2021 that aims to amend the Biodiversity Act of 2002.
It was drafted in response to complaints by traditional Indian medicine practitioners, the seed sector, industry and researchers that the Act made it hard to conduct collaborative research and It proposes to decriminalize offences under the Act and substituting them with penalties (between ₹1lakh and 50lakhs and up to ₹1cr for continuing violations) and no imprisonment.
