The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation has formed a new Standing Committee on Statistics to advise on official data.
Headed by India's first Chief Statistician, Pronab Sen, the panel will have 14 members.
The SCoS will replace a similar panel set up in December 2019 to advise on economic statistics, help design surveys and identify data gaps.
One of the first tasks for it will likely pertain to the results of the Household Consumption Expenditure Survey by the NSSO over the past year.
The HCES is important to ascertain people's living standards over time, and for revising economic indicators such as the Consumer Price Index and the GDP.
The last survey was conducted in 2017-18, but its findings were never released by the government.
