The occupied West Bank witnessed a sharp escalation in violence this week, with Israeli raids in Jenin and Palestinian attacks in Eli. Jewish settlements have gradually mushroomed in West Bank, and Jenin in its north has emerged as a hotbed of violent Palestinian resistance.
The area has been burning for quite some time. Although, Israel has, in the recent years, prevented the rise of any organised resistance, isolated attacks have always been common.
The current situation in the area is thus: Palestinians at divided in the West Bank and Gaza; and the Arab world, once supportive of Palestinian aspiration of nationhood, is now mending ties with Israel.
The only possible way to stop the cycle of violence would be genuine efforts to freeze the Israeli settlements and open a dialogue between the two sides.
