The new gen ballistic missile was successfully flight tested from Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Island off Odisha.
• It is the latest and sixth variant of the Agni series missiles (under IGMDP - Integrated Guided Missile Development Program).
• the IGMDP (Integrated Guided Missile Development Program) was conceived by Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam to enable India attain self-sufficiency in the field of missile technology. The 5 missiles developed under this program are: Prithvi, Agni, Trishul, Nag, and Akash.
• the Agni class of missiles are the mainstay of India’s nuclear launch capability. The other Agni missiles are— Agni I, II, III, IV and V, with their range increasing in the same order.
• The Agni Prime missile would further strengthen India's credible deterrence capabilities.
