Mandala art
Means “ circle” or “center” in Sanskrit. It is defined by a geometric configuration that usually incorporate the circular shape in some form.
Origin is believed to be rooted in Buddhism in 1st century BC in India.
In Hinduism , the mandala imagery first appeared in Rigveda
Meaning –
It is believed that by entering the mandala and moving towards its center, one is guided through the cosmic process of transforming the universe from one of that of Joy.
Various elements incorporated in the Mandala ,each of which has its own meaning.
For e.g. the eight spokes of the wheel (the dharamachakra) represent the the eightfold path of Buddhism, the lotus flower depicts balance , the sun represent creativity and knowledge.
Mandala continues to appear in Thangka paintings. Tantric and neo – tantric movement.
